Pets at Home store to close

Pets at Home in Berwick is due to close in October this year.

   Nine staff will be affected.
The move follows a major restructuring strategy after Pets at Home’s retail
business saw underlying profits plummet by 84.1% to £3.5 million in the six months to October 2025.
‘We routinely review the future potential of each of our stores, and we have recently taken the decision to close our store in Berwick,’ a Pets at Home spokesman told The Bridge. ‘This is part of an ongoing annual review to fine-tune our estate, which includes new store openings as well as closures from time to time.
‘Whilst these are always difficult decisions, our first priority is our colleagues, and we’re pleased to have been able to offer the colleagues impacted the

opportunity to transfer to nearby stores in Alnwick and Galashiels. Customers can continue accessing all of our pet care products and services at other Pets at Home stores nearby and online.’
The building has been considered an eyesore by residents from the outset. It replaced a much-loved single-storey building.
At the time of the build in 2017 the developer said the new building replaced: ‘a rundown former furniture store and has improved the appearance of the location, which is on the edge of the Conservation Area and an important gateway into the town, creating twenty jobs.’

Alnwick and Galashiels are hardly ‘nearby’. Clearly those closing the store have no idea about either the geography of the area or the travel logistics!

Halfords said the same thing about nearby stores when they closed. Haven’t been near one since.

The groomers are why people go there. Direct Pets is much better. Pets at Home is a multi-national.Driect Pets should offer the Room Groom 🙂 We’d all go there.

Pets at Home offer a superb service in the range of products they supply. Used to use Direct Pets as it was my closest pet shop until Pets at Home opened in Berwick. I refuse to do an 80 minute round trip to either Gala or Alnwick, not just because of time but also fuel costs. They are going to lose all the custom of this area. Good for Direct Pets but not so good for those loyal to Pets at Home.
