Armed Forces Support in Northumberland

The county council is hosting an Armed Forces Awareness Day in June to highlight the support that is available in Northumberland for veterans, reservists, serving personnel and their families.

The event will take place on Tuesday 25 June, South Beach Green Space, Blyth, NE24 3PL, next to Blyth Battery between 11am – 3pm.

There will be lots of information available with representation from the Army Reserves, Walking with the Wounded, Age UK, RAF Hive and more, as well as the county council’s own Armed Forces and Veterans Outreach Workers.

There will also be people present who can assist with issues such as housing and medical applications, employment support, mental health, benefits, as well as signposting and referring to other veteran organisations for further help.

A Spokesperson for Northumberland County Council said:

“In Northumberland, our Armed Forces Community is not forgotten. We understand they may face personal challenges after serving their country and we are here to support them to work through them.

“Our Armed Forces and Veterans Outreach Workers are veterans themselves and understand better than anyone the issues they face. They will be present throughout the day alongside representatives from a range of Armed Forces Support organisations.”

The day will be relaxed and informal so if you are linked to the Armed Forces in any way and feel you need a bit of support, save the date, come along and meet people who can help you.

If you can’t make the day but would like to find out more contact Email: armedforcesqueries@northumberland.gov.uk

The Bridge launches crowdfunder in bid to access £2,000

The Bridge match-fundraising campaign has launched in a bid to raise a total of £2,000 before the end of June.

£200 was raised during Indie News Week and the remainder has to be sourced in order to receive a match-fund pledge of £2,000 from the Public Interest News Foundation (PINF).

‘It’s a great chance for The Bridge to secure its short-term future,’ said The Bridge editor, Wendy Robertson. ‘After a year of hand-to-mouth survival it would be wonderful to have a buffer for a few weeks.’

The Bridge launched sixteen months ago and is currently printed every two months with a youtube channel, Instagram and Facebook pages starting to provide visual news.

The progress bar below indicates the total so far – online and offline donations combined.

Indie News Week 3-9 June

Come and say Hello to The Bridge editor, Wendy Robertson, during Indie News Week.

Bring your stories and ideas for items.
Tell me what you think of your community newsletter and how it can be improved to best serve Berwick.

Support your community news provider and keep independent news alive. Local journalism is in crisis throughout the world; investigating and communicating news costs money but without community-based journalism more ‘news deserts’ will start to appear.

Without journalists who will hold power to account and how will communities stay informed of issues that affect them?
The Public Interest News Forum (PINF) is addressing these issues and 3-9 June is the first INDIE NEWS WEEK.

The more you and your community know, the more power you have to shape your own future. And we’re here to help with that. We put the power in your hands.

‘Independent media has never been more needed and we need to continue rocking the boat.’
